When all else fails... use a bigger hammer... or remove all evidence that you tried !!!

Hi gvas. No one else has answered so i will....
I will explain a few basics that seem to elude people. The .ATA file is NOT the website, as such, but a single working file that Antenna uses to store all the proprietary info it needs to work on your site. Sort of, (though not the same!)like a .ZIP file may contain many bits & pieces. When you select "Publish", the working file is saved & compiled into all the individual files/components/folders that comprise the 'site', complete with all the pictures, .htm files, .css files, javascript files etc. into a TEMP directory and then THAT is what it finally UPLOADS or 'PUBLISHES'.
What MOST people DON'T do, (and i always do), is EXPORT first, to a directory or sub-directory of my choice, and then UPLOAD the 'site' from there, using 3rd party tools like 'Filezilla' (free). I know the 'PUBLISH' option exists to keep it simpler for people, but they loose grasp of what/where there site is.
ALSO.... Make sure you keep saving different versions (especially major ones) under newer .ATA file versions, like.... 'MySite-1.ata, MySite-2.ata' etc etc. And create new export builds of those in their own directories! If you make a major screw-up, or think in another direction, you can easilly go back.
In using a (free) 3rd party program LIKE 'Filezilla', to transfer your files to your actual website, (FTP, File Transfer Protocol), then the same tool allows you to view your actual website files/folders on-line, as if you are using file-explorer. As such, you can navigate or create/delete any files/folders manually.
Re: gvas question... I am assuming that after you do any edits, that you just "Publish" them... If you have made changes that no longer reference old files or directories etc then any files originally used for that site within the .ATA file, like a "/Holiday-Pics/" directory, or a "not-used-now.htm" file that may no longer be used, but is still part of the BUILD, will be compiled and uploaded. You need to delete them yourself, by selecting such files/folders from the list on the right-hand side in Antenna. Then re-save, pref with a new name. They are no longer part of the .ATA file, and so not included in the build.
They will NOT be re-uploaded each time you make a change, but you may if you want, delete the redundant files/folders from the actual 'site' with Filezilla.
Assuming you do what i said and always EXPORT from Antenna first, this is ALSO a great plus !!! Assuming you only changed a few words on ONE page, (.htm), then via 'Filezilla' or what ever, you do NOT have to RE-UPLOAD the entire SITE again! Just re-upload the individual file, like.... 'index.htm' or contact.htm' etc file from the EXPORTED folder. However.. i always re-upload the 'antenna.css' file too in case there were detected changes in style/layout too. AND if i have done anything FANCY xx on the page with interpreted code, then I will re-upload the 'CORE' (in latest Antenna) directory too!! just in case.
FINAL NOTE: Within Antenna, you can click on 'Preview (the half-eye)' in IE, Firefox, Chrome, which shows you your site using those browsers, from a temp build on your hard drive. Great for checking functionality on the go..... but don't forget !!!.... when telling customers/friends to look at your mods from THEIR end, that they may need to do a RE-FRESH of their page to see the CHANGES, NOT what is in their Cache.

I think you can NOW (in the new 5.4) delete the buttons. In the button properties you have something called styles and it has a little MOUSE to the left of the dropdown arrow. Click on the MOUSE and it will give you all the Button styles you have. In theory you can delete them one by one, even the default one.
The reason I use the internal FTP is that when you add an Antenna update (say from 5.3 to 5.4) it may affect some small insignificant (to us ) code, but important to the new 5.4. Antenna will then ( in theory) only upload the files that have has some type of change, either one we made or one that the system made. Does it some time upload everything for the hell of it yes. But most of the time no.
Hope something here helps, Frank

How bizarre. I came to ask this exact question and just browsed the first page of threads out of curiosity - then I saw this thread.... exactly my question.
Hi Frank, I know you answered you 'think' the "Core" buttons can be deleted. I'd like to know if I can delete the "Core" folder. I'm not using it nor anything inside it- not files show in that folder except the freeform php I don't use anyway. Yet I see from my serverside the folder is showing folder activity and buttons getting hits from that folder??? So, is there definitely any problem at all in deleting Antenna's "Core" named-folder entirely?

I just opened a new project and tried deleting stuff. NO: The CORE folder and FONT folder inside it CANNOT be deleted. YES: The FREEFORM CAN be deleted.
Cheers, Frank

if you manually delete the core folder from your site with a 3rd part ftp program you may make things on your site not work, the core folder contains hidden code that is only visible when exported or uploaded. It contains auto.js form.js freeform.js menu.js

Thanks for that information Frank and Graham and the fast reply. I was out of forum activity for a long while - good to come back and see familiar faces...... Can I make a strong recommendation that this most Essential information be put up as a warning-sticky in this forum with a description of what it means/ does as you folks already noted.
For some bizarre reason though, although I've never put anything into the core-folder directory, on the server side the core has created /is showing it has 3 or 4 very small old image files > menu tabs that lead nowhere themselves; pngs /jpgs. Seems like they show spider activity hits - around a few hundred hits each exact same number of hits; 1) are those image files themselves ok to delete? 2) Any idea on the mechanics of if/why a core folder would create/grab files to put in its directory
